LWWI Dates for the Diary - April 2012

Hello Ladies

Sometimes things that seem so hard, scary and unpleasant when confronted and faced can actually give one a great sense of relief.

At the moment a number of us seem to be going through a Job period in our lives. But they say one only goes through this once in your life and hope springs eternal.

A number of times now our WI has come to the brink of closure as membership numbers fell and
funds, attendees and enthusiasm were in very short supply and we have had discussions about winding up and as we have stood on the brink of the precipice somehow things shortly afterwards take a turn for the better.

Once again our numbers of paid up members are low. Please can you either pay per visit or pay for the year. [Either pay Jane our Treasurer at the next meeting or pay online using paypal button on the blog.]

We have a very exciting calendar of Monthly meeting events for the year already secured.
We the committee are only working on the details of extraneous items like trips, bake sales and
theatre offers.

Please see below for the calendar of events and all other dates for the diary information.

If you have any news that you would like us to share please do not hesitate to get in touch via londonwestendwi@gmail.com

Wanted Unwanted clothes for a homeless women's charity.
Meg is after any unwanted wardrobe items for a homeless women's charity:

Dear all

I wonder if next time you are going through your wardrobes you would think of passing stuff on to me for the homeless women’s charity I work for.

All sizes welcome, all styles. Also shoes, sandals and handbags, costume jewellery etc.

Our women come in a variety of sizes and presentation. They obviously need warm sensible items, but do like pretty, nice things as well.

Many thanks

Meg

Oxfam Big Bra Hunt
Jane our treasurer has asked us to let you all know about this:

The Oxfam Big Bra Hunt is on – and it’s your chance to support women around the world, simply by donating your forgotten bras.

Find your nearest shop and donate your bras today.

Bras might not seem like the most obvious thing to donate. But every single one will change lives.

Some we’ll sell in our UK shops to raise money for our work around the world. But most will be sent to Senegal, where Oxfam runs 'Frip Ethique' – a social enterprise where people earn a good living by sorting and selling donated clothes. Bras there raise more money than any other item – and the profits generated by the business get invested in our work fighting poverty in Senegal.

Organise a bra-hunting collection with friends or at work.

The Women’s Library is in danger of closing
Pam our President just sent this through and although based in Aldgate she thought this might be something we could lend our support to. As the WI is opposing the closure of libraries generally.

Local cookery lessons
Dear Ladies

We have recently received that email below asking us for Let’s Cook Local courses in London, N1.  We do not have any trained tutors in the London area who could meet this obvious need and I am emailing you all to see whether any of your ladies would be interested in joining the project.

Let’s Cook Local is a lottery funded project where our trained volunteers go into centres to teach young, disadvantaged parents how to cook healthy, family  meals.  I am attaching details of the project and a tutor job description.  We have a free tutor training day on 27th April at 104 New Kings Road, London so this would be an ideal opportunity for your members to come on board – WI members can claim up to £50 in travel costs to attend.

The project is fully supported centrally with training materials (tutor manuals, recipe cards, aprons and bags) for each student and tutor.  Do take a look on Moodle for more details.

I very much hope that you might be able to get a team of members in London together who might be interested and I would be happy to discuss this with them.  There is an obvious need in the capital for this type of initiative and all our tutors are finding the experience very worthwhile.  This is not the only venue who would be delighted to have a course from us so if your members can offer their help, we are happy to assist with finding venues, students and local food producers etc.

Kindest regards

Lesley
